So in between was purgatory where you go to be tested and tried. This was a teaching of the early church, but it wasn't purgatory there. The fires and flames purge out all impurities and sin acquired in life as Hamlet's father said. Then you are ready to pass on because you have been purged. There's why it was called the purgatorium. Early Christians had the same thing, but they didn't call it purgatory. They called it the anapausus, the frigidarium. The Egyptians use much the same expression. There's a very eloquent picture of it up in the museum now in the Ramses exhibit.
